Q: Can I use a diamond blade for side grinding as well as cutting?

Desert Diamond Industries - FAQA: You can, but only if your blade is solid steel and doesn’t have welds. Not all saw blades are like this!

Most diamond blades have welded cutting segments. The welds on these segments aren’t designed to take the force of side grinding. Abrasive blades aren’t designed for side grinding, either.

Therefore, if you use a welded or abrasive blade to grind or bevel surfaces, there’s a very good chance that it’ll break or shatter. These blades have killed their operators after breaking or shattering.

The Ductile Iron Safety Blade, on the other hand, is designed with a solid steel core and without welds (up to 14″). It won’t break like welded blades or shatter like abrasives during cutting or grinding. The Ductile Iron Safety Blade’s ability to side grind makes it a great tool for water departments and anyone else who wants to cut, grind and bevel without swapping tools.
